• Location
The Union of Myanmar is geographically situated in Southeast Asia between latitudes 09 H 32' N and 28 H31' N and longitudes 92 H 10' E and 101 H11' E.
Myanmar is bordered on the north and northeast by the People's Republic of China, on the east and southeast by the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand, on the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal and on the west by the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Republic of India.
East longitude 96 H 6 ' and north latitude 19 H45' run through Nay Pyi Taw, the Capital City of Myanmar. Myanmar Standard Time, taken as on east longitude 97 H30' is six hours and thirty minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
• Area
The total area of Myanmar is 2,61,228 square miles(6,77,000 square kilometres). It stretches for 582 miles (936 kilometres) from east to west and 1,275 miles (2,051 kilometres) from north to south.
The length of contiguous frontier is 3,828 miles(6,129 kilometres), sharing 1,370 miles (2210 kilometres)with China, 1,310 miles (2103 Kilometres)with Thailand,832 miles(1342 kilometres) with India,1,687 miles (2721 kilometres)with Bangladesh and 148 miles (239 kilometres)with Laos respectively. The length of the coastline from the mouth of Naaf River to Kawthaung is approximately 1,385 miles(2234 kilometres).
• Population
The Union of Myanmar is made up of one hundred of thirty five national races of which the main ethnic groups are Kachin, Kayah,Kayin, Chin, Bamar , Mon, Rakhine and Shan. According to the statistics of 2009, the population of the country is estimated at 58.38 million and the population growth rate is 1.52 per cent. Males constitute 29.03 million, forming 49.72 per cent and females constitute 29.35 milloin, forming 50.28 per cent.
• National Labor Force Situation
In 2007 total employment was estimated to be 29.33 million out of which male employed was 18.13 million or 61.81 per cent and the female employed was 11.28 million or 39.19 per cent based on increase in social and economic progress of the country resulting in more creation of employment opportunities and with the extensive participation of private interprise in economic activities. Labour force participation rate was 66.16 per cent as more employment opportunities are coming up. Unemployment rate was 4.01 per cent.
Out of the total employment, 56.5 per cent was engaged in the agricultural sector, 11.4 per cent was employed in the processing and manufacturing sector, and the remaining productive sectors such as mining, power, energy, construction employed 3.7 per cent. Service sector such as transport and communications, social services, administration, and other services engaged 12.6 per cent , and 15.8 per cent was employed in the trade sector respectively. |
