• Location
The Union of Myanmar is geographically situated in Southeast Asia between latitudes 09 deg 32 min N and 28 deg 31 min N and longitudes 92 deg 10 min E and 101 deg 11 min E.
Myanmar is bordered on the north and northeast by the People's Republic of China, on the east and southeast by the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand, on the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal and on the west by the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Republic of India.
East longitude 96 deg 13 min and north latitude 16 deg 45 min run through Yangon, Myanmar. Myanmar Standard Time, taken as on east longitude 97 deg 30 min is six hours and thirty minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
• Area
The total area of Myanmar is 261,228 square miles(677,000 square kilometers). It stretches for 582 miles(936 kilometers) from east to west and 1,275miles(2,051 kilometers) from north to south.
The length of contiguous frontier is 3,828 miles(6,129kilometres),sharing 1,370miles(2,210kilometers) with China, 1,310 miles (2,103 kilometers) with Thailand, 832 miles(1,342 Kilometers) with India, 1,687 miles(2,721 kilometers) with Bangladesh and 148 miles (239 kilometers) with Laos respectively. The length of the coastline from the mouth of Naaf River to Kawthaung is approximately 1,385 miles( 2,234 kilometers).
• Population
The Union of Myanmar is made up of one hundred and thirty five national races of which the main ethnic groups are Kachin, Kayah,Kayin, Chin,Bamar, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. According to the statistics of 2005,the population of the country is estimated at 54.27 million and the population growth rate is 1.84 per cent. Males constitute 26.96 million, forming 49.66 per cent and females constitute 27.31 million, forming 50.34 per cent.
• National Labor Force Situation
In 2003 total employment was estimated to be 26.36 million out of which male employed was 16.29 million or 61.80 per cent and female employed was 10.07 million or 38.20 per cent based on increase in social and economic progress of the country resulting in more creation of employment opportunities and with the extensive participation of private enterprise in economic activities. Labour force participation rate was 64.17 per cent as more employment opportunities are coming up. Unemployment rate was 4.02 per cent.
Out of the total employment , 64.09 per cent was engaged in the agricultural sector, 8.42 per cent was employed in the processing and manufacturing sector, and the remaining productive sectors such as mining, power, energy, construction employed 7.62 per cent. Service sector such as transport and communications ,social services, administration, and other services engaged 10.12 per cent, and 9.75 per cent was employed in the trade sector respectively. |
